DAY 2

VINEYARDS OF ATTICA

According to Greek Mythology, Dionysus, the God of wine and mirth, entrusted the residents of Attica with the secrets of viticulture and the art of wine drinking. The district of Mesogeia is the oldest and largest wine-producing region in Greece. With more than 26 winemakers, the area has been distributing wine throughout Greece for ages – literally.

Due to the area’s microclimate, Savvatiano grapes are predominant; these produce golden-colored wines with a light taste, delicate aroma and low acidity. Savvatiano are mainly used for the production of Restina. Many red wines are also produced in Mesogeia and distributed not only within Greece (in liquor stores, grocery stores, taverns, etc.), but also abroad, primarily in Germany and the United States.

Viticulture in the area has been carried out without the use of pesticides and sprays for centuries, resulting in grapes of unparalleled quality and premium wines. Thanks to the new generation of oenologists, winegrowers, and agronomists Attica’s wines are more and more competitive in the international wine market today. Meanwhile, the wider Attica wine country is continually enriched with new Greek varieties such as Assyrtiko, Malagouzia, Athiri, and Agiorgitiko, as well as with international varieties such as Cabernet, Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

Tour Highlights:

  • Visit the top three wineries of the region

DAY 3

LOOKING FOR THE MUSSES IN EVIA

Evia was believed to have originally formed part of the mainland, and to have been separated from it by an earthquake. This is fairly probable, because it lies in the neighborhood of a fault line, and both Thucydides and Strabo write that the northern part of the island had been shaken at different periods. At one moment the current runs like a river in one direction, and shortly afterwards with equal velocity in the other. Geography and nature divide the island itself into three distinct parts: the fertile and forested north, the mountainous center, with agriculture limited to the coastal valleys, and the barren south. The main mountains include Dirfi, Ochi and Pyxaria in the northeast are famous for the variety of mushrooms growing in the region.

The vineyards are at an altitude of 250 - 500 m. lying on flat places, semi-mountainous slopes or even steep mountainous ones. The climate is Mediterranean - cold winters, hot summers and long, dry autumns. During autumn and winter months cold air masses blow dawn from mountain Dirphi, carrying dew which supplies the vineyards with important humidity. The long periods of sunshine help grapes ripen ideally in this part of central Greece.
